SafeStart
The city-wide SafeStart program seeks to reduce the incidence and impact of violence on young children. SafeStart delivers services, develops policies, and works to improve the systems which respond to families with young children exposed to violence. SafeStart is available to any family residing in San Francisco with a child aged 6 or under who may have been exposed to violence. All services are optional, free and confidential, and available in English, Spanish, Cantonese and other Asian languages.
Services for families may include the following:
- Case management
- Advocacy
- Support groups for children and parents/caregivers
- Parenting education
- Assistance with finding child care, shelter and food
- Counseling for young children and parents/caregivers
- Linkages to other programs and community services when desired
- Information and referrals
The San Francisco Child Abuse Prevention Center is the lead agency for the SafeStart program which is conveniently located throughout San Francisco at the following locations:

- Instituto Familiar de la Raza
- OMI Family Resource Center
- TALK Line Family Support Center

Learn about free training on the impact of violence on children for staff at agencies that serve San Francisco families. Free workshops are also available for parent groups to learn about how violence might be affecting their children. Trainings and workshops are available in English, Spanish and Mandarin.
