| The San Francisco Child
Abuse Prevention Center provides support services for families, and has volunteer
positions available for telephone counselors at TALK Line (Telephone Aid in Living
with Kids) and assistants in our Children's Playroom.
TALK Line
The TALK Line forms the core of our complex of family support services
and is San Francisco's only 24-hour crisis and counseling line for parents. It
is staffed solely by volunteers. Volunteer telephone counselors provide
immediate telephone counseling to parents as well as long term follow-up by phone.
Volunteers in this capacity have a unique opportunity to build relationships with,
and provide ongoing support to, parents in all of their life struggles and challenges.
Being a telephone counselor is a wonderful contribution to the community and allows
you to have a positive affect on children's lives as well. Volunteer
telephone counselors must be at least 25 years of age and go through a screening
and interview process. They complete a 50-hour training in crisis intervention,
basic counseling skills, child development and family dynamics provided by a professional
staff. Volunteers make a one year commitment to a weekly four-hour shift at the
Center as well as one overnight shift per month, with calls forwarded to the volunteers
home.
Childrens Playroom and Respite
Center Child care assistants in the Playroom and at the Respite Center
work alongside our professional staff. Volunteers have the opportunity to care for and play with really great kids. Volunteers provide more individual attention and support to the children. The only skills required are a caring heart and a playful spirit. Playroom Assistants must be at least 18 years of age, go though a screening and interview process, and commit to one 2-3 hour shift per week for 6 months. Some teenage volunteers are also accepted.
