The San Francisco Child Abuse Council annually provides training to approximately 5,000 San Francisco schoolchildren in safety awareness and assertiveness, and to approximately 5,000 child-serving professionals in how to identify and report suspected child abuse and neglect. The Council also educates the public, policy makers and legislators about child abuse, monitors legislation that increases allocation of funding for local child abuse programs and coordinates monthly meetings among child abuse prevention agencies in San Francisco. In addition, the Council works within the public sector to coordinate child abuse response systems in San Francisco and has developed protocols for handling physical and sexual abuse cases in hospital settings. It also creates and disseminates information such as the Guide on Child Abuse to shelters serving homeless persons and battered women.
