New Yorker Article Highlights our Strategic Partnerships

We are proud to share a recent article in The New Yorker Magazine that highlights the work of our colleague, Dr. Nadine Burke, Medical Director of CPMC's Bayview Child Health Center [Click HERE for the article's abstract.] The article, currently available online and on newsstands on March 21st, focuses on Dr. Burke’s extraordinary work helping address the physical and mental health needs of children living in poverty who are often exposed to violence. The piece also highlights the San Francisco Child Abuse Prevention Center ("the Prevention Center") as a key partner in the development of a unique approach to respond to urban violence and poverty.

With the leadership and support of Lisa Pritzker, a long-time champion of child and adolescent health, friend of the Prevention Center and past volunteer with the TALK Line, as well as California Attorney General and former San Francisco District Attorney Kamala Harris; the Prevention Center is working with our long-term partners in the Mayor's Office, the District Attorney's Office, the Human Services Agency, Family and Children's Services Division, the San Francisco Police Department, and the Department of Public Health through the Child and Adolescent Support Advocacy and Resources Center at San Francisco General and the University of California, San Francisco to develop the accredited Child Advocacy Center.

The Prevention Center is also working with Drs. Burke and Carrion to develop the wellness components of the Center for Youth Wellness. As you know, this integrated children's wellness center will provide comprehensive, multi-disciplinary services in a state-of-the-art facility to address all of the needs of traumatized children and provide comprehensive and preventive medical care to keep kids healthy.

Strong support from the Tipping Point Community and other philanthropic leaders means the integrated Child Advocacy Center and Center for Youth Wellness should be ready to open its doors in 2012. No other center in the country combines an accredited Child Advocacy Center with comprehensive wellness services, primary pediatric care and research and evaluation programming.
